What is Charvak Reservoir?

Charvak Reservoir (Chorvoq suv ombori) is a vast high-altitude artificial lake nestled in the Bostanlyk district at an elevation of nearly 900 meters above sea level. Formed by a 168-meter-high rockfill dam at the confluence of the Pskem, Koksu, and Chatkal rivers, the reservoir holds nearly two billion cubic meters of turquoise glacial meltwater. Encircled by the towering summits of the Chatkal and Ugam mountain ranges, Charvak is Tashkent's favorite warm-weather sanctuary for swimming, boating, parasailing, lakeside dining, and refreshing mountain air.

Historical Context

Chronicles & Story

For centuries before the dam's construction, the Charvak basin was a confluence of deep mountain gorges dotted with ancient mountain villages (kishlaks), walnut groves, and sacred springs. Today, the shoreline has developed into a popular recreation zone featuring lakeside hotels, family resorts, yacht clubs, and panoramic restaurants serving fresh trout and mountain mutton. In the heat of July and August, when city temperatures in Tashkent climb, Charvak offers cool breezes and water temperatures ideal for swimming.

Who Created It and Why?

Engineered by Soviet and Uzbek hydraulic engineers to harness the rushing alpine waters of the Chirchiq river basin for hydroelectric energy, ensure reliable irrigation for downstream agricultural cotton and orchard plains, and regulate spring snowmelt floods.

Established: Construction of the colossal Charvak hydroelectric dam began in 1964. The reservoir reached full operational capacity in 1970. Archaeological excavations prior to flooding uncovered ancient petroglyphs and Neanderthal cave dwellings in the canyon, some of which were preserved in local regional museums.

The dam itself is an impressive rockfill structure measuring 168 meters in height and 770 meters across its crest. The lake surface spans over 37 square kilometers, with a shoreline exceeding 100 kilometers. Its striking milky-turquoise color is caused by fine glacial rock flour suspended in pure meltwater running down from the Chatkal Range glaciers.
