This is not simply a scenic lake excursion—it is an exhilarating, full-day cross-border adventure that combines pre-Islamic archaeology, ancient Sogdian civilization, dramatic mountain gorges, and the untouched natural wonder of the Fann Mountains. Departing early from Samarkand, you drive 35 km to the Jartepa–Sarazm border post. After crossing into Tajikistan, you meet your Tajik mountain vehicle and driver, visiting the 5,500-year-old UNESCO Bronze Age settlement of Sarazm and the ancient ruins of Penjikent. Then, you ascend into the rugged Shing Valley, where seven cascading alpine lakes (Haft Kul)—each possessing a distinctly different shade from deep indigo to glowing turquoise and jade—lie cradled between steep rock cliffs and traditional Tajik villages.

The Fann Mountains rise over 2,100 meters at the lakes. Mountain air is noticeably cooler and winds can arise quickly; bring a warm fleece or windbreaker.
Road Conditions & Reaching Lake 7
Reaching Lake 7 (Hazorchashma) requires strenuous additional hiking beyond the road terminus at Lake 6. Standard day tours focus on the accessible and picturesque lakes 1 through 6.
